In terms of the numbers of entries, the 2007 Western Australian Breed Show was a little disappointing. For a variety of reasons, a number of the “stalwarts” were unable to exhibit, and newer members turned up as spectators – with the prospect of exhibiting in future Breed Shows. The result was a smaller showing than has occurred over the past few years, particularly with regard to the number of Grade Dexters exhibited. This has become a predictable trend over the last few years, as many breeders’ herds now contain a much greater percentage of purebred stock. That is to be expected, and breeders are to be congratulated on their persistence in upgrading all the way through to purebred. On the flip side, there were a number of positives that were definitely encouraging. For example, the number of spectators was definitely up and all present enjoyed the facilities at Harvey Showgrounds, along with the great morning teas and lunches – once again organised by the South West Group. Those hot cups of tea and coffee were particularly appreciated in the crisp chill of the early morning!! And we definitely had an interesting first: a father and daughter judging team. Tony Golding of Little Meadow Angus Stud and his daughter, Trinity, officiated. Whilst Tony is an old hand at judging Dexters (dating back to 1997 at the Donnybrook Apple Festival), this was Trinity’s baptism of fire. Not that she lacks experience. Last year she took out the Championship of the National Junior Judging Competition.

So, good facilities, great cooperation and excellent judging… What else could we want? On, yes, the cattle . . . . . What the competition may have lacked in numbers, it certainly compensated for in terms of quality – most particularly, the depth of the quality in each class. Gone are the days when there were one or two “stand-out” cattle and the rest were fairly average. These days the quality goes right down through the field. From a spectator’s point-of-view that makes for an interesting spectacle. From the judge’s perspective it makes for a welcome challenge. As for the breed itself, it makes for confidence in the future. There are still improvements in quality to be made. Height of cattle, udder longevity, and feet/legs are still areas at which we, as breeders, must keep tweaking away. But the hard yards have already been put in and, as the day demonstrated clearly to all present, that has already paid off in a big way. Congratulations to those who showed, to those who helped behind the scenes and to those who watched from the sidelines. A great day was had by all. Written by Sue Hannaford |
